Mari-Ann Deering and Jan Newman founded HR Focus to provide practical human resource solutions for organizations without a staff of HR professionals, companies in need of interim HR assistance or those seeking to outsource their HR needs so they can focus on growing their business.

Mari-Ann and Jan have combined passion for ethical employee relations and attention to the bottom line to create a consulting firm that helps businesses succeed by maximizing human capital.

Mari-Ann Deering, SPHR
  • More than 25 years of executive-level human resources experience
  • Served as a Senior Vice President of Human Resources for a $2 billion proprietary education company with multiple sites and 17,000+ employees
  • Extensive experience with organizations experiencing explosive growth and constant change
  • Labor relations responsibilities with several different bargaining units and unions
  • MBA from Rockhurst University, Kansas City, MO
  • BS degree in Business Administration from Avila College, Kansas City, MO
  • Certified as a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) from the Human Resource Certification Institute

Janice (Jan) Newman, SPHR, MHRM, CELS

  • Nearly two decades of progressively responsible, executive-level experience in human resources
  • Formerly the Corporate Vice President of Human Resources for a $2 billion proprietary education company with multiple sites and 17,000+ employees
  • Broad experience with organizations undergoing tremendous change, involving dramatic restructuring and downsizing
  • MBA from Keller Graduate School of Management in Chicago
  • Masters in Human Resources Management (MHRM) from Keller Graduate School
  • BA from University of Nebraska – Lincoln
  • Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) certification from the Human Resource Certification Institute
  • Certified Employment Law Specialist (CELS) from Columbia Southern University.
